OJ 9/6, [57a] - Handwritten postcard from Eugen d’Albert to Schenker, undated [July/August 1912]
{recto}
⇧ Herrn Dr Heinrich Schenker Hotel Paneveggio Paneveggio Südtirol. XIII. Elßlergaße 20 1 © Transcription Ian Bent, 2021 |

[postmark:] || SPITAL | [illeg] | [AM] SEMMERING || {verso} ⇧ Dear Dr. [Schenker], I didn’t receive your booklet from the [?Uni] publishing house until the day before yesterday, and am accordingly only now writing to you. I find the material too meager for opera – a playwright (you indeed mention Schnitzler) would be able to make something of it; our opera librettists are, however, all too lacking in ideas or too idle to provide the extensive additional detail necessary. Thank you again for the interesting reading. From September 5 on: Vienna XIII, Elßlergaße 20 1 © Translation Ian Bent, 2021 |

Footnotes1 On May 11, 1912 (OJ 9/6, [56]), d‘Albert, having previously invited Schenker to his new Vienna home at Elßlergaße 20, had to “disinvite” him because the house was not ready. By December 4 OJ 9/6, [58] d’Albert wrote from that address on headed notepaper. Evidently therefore the house was, on current predictions, due to be ready by September. D’Albert does not appear in Lehmann’s Street Directory of Vienna for 1912, but does so for 1913. |
