Samstag.

Lieber Herr Doctor!

Herzl. Grüße Ihnen

Saturday

Dear Dr. [Schenker],

Unfortunately my household is not yet functioning. 1 I have once again to disinvite you. Please accept my profuse apologies! I have written to my [?elf] – his name is Felix Hupka – telling him he should make his way to your place today at 6 o’clock. 2 Please listen to his compositions. He is in need of a systematic teacher. He is no outstanding talent, but he is decidedly gifted. If you would teach him, he would do excellently. 3

Cordial greetings to you,

Footnotes

1 d’Albert and his wife had recently moved into Gußhausstraße 12, Vienna IV.

2 “Kobold”: the writing is not entirely clear. “Kobold” has a range of meanings: elf, imp, sprite, goblin, pixie, etc. Schenker himself once referred to Hupka as “der kleine Hupka” (“the little Hupka”) (diary, September 5, 1914), suggesting that he was of diminutive stature. Hans Weisse in a letter of June 1, 1912 (OJ 15/16, [4]) also refers to him as “der kleine Hupka.” This letter follows OJ 9/6, [55a], in which d‘Albert asks Schenker whether he would like to teach a 15-year-old “young musician.”

3 An imprecisely dated entry in Schenker’s diary for June 1912 reads: “Aufnahme eines neuen Schülers, Felix Hupka, der sich zuerst an d'Albert wendete u. erst über dessen Empfehlung zu mir kam (Theorie u. Klavierspiel).” (“Acceptance of a new pupil, Felix Hupka, who turned first to d'Albert and came to me only on the latter's recommendation (for theory and piano).”).
