Footnotes1 d’Albert and his wife had recently moved into Gußhausstraße 12, Vienna IV. 2 “Kobold”: the writing is not entirely clear. “Kobold” has a range of meanings: elf, imp, sprite, goblin, pixie, etc. Schenker himself once referred to Hupka as “der kleine Hupka” (“the little Hupka”) (diary, September 5, 1914), suggesting that he was of diminutive stature. Hans Weisse in a letter of June 1, 1912 (OJ 15/16, [4]) also refers to him as “der kleine Hupka.” This letter follows OJ 9/6, [55a], in which d‘Albert asks Schenker whether he would like to teach a 15-year-old “young musician.” 3 An imprecisely dated entry in Schenker’s diary for June 1912 reads: “Aufnahme eines neuen Schülers, Felix Hupka, der sich zuerst an d'Albert wendete u. erst über dessen Empfehlung zu mir kam (Theorie u. Klavierspiel).” (“Acceptance of a new pupil, Felix Hupka, who turned first to d'Albert and came to me only on the latter's recommendation (for theory and piano).”). |
