Footnotes1 Hertzka had approached Schenker on December 18, 1908 (OC 52/399-401) to provide an edition of the Well-tempered Clavier Book II, to be published by Universal Edition and adopted by the Vienna Conservatory upon its becoming a state institution, at the invitation of its new Director, Wilhelm Bopp. Schenker declined the proposal on December 22 (WSLB 31). On January 7, 1909 Hertzka asked to discuss the matter further (OC 52/33), and Schenker's almost facetiously ironic reply was written on January 8 (WSLB 35), to which Hertzka replied on January 11 (OC 52/919) that he would not be deterred. For a full discussion of this ultimately abortive negotiation, see Ian Bent, "'That Bright New Light': Schenker, Universal Edition, and the Origins of the Erläuterung Series, 1901‒1910," Journal of the Musicological Society vol. 58/1 (Spring 2005), 81‒87. |
