In my opinion, in that case you should definitely refuse if Mrs. G—Schd 1 herself were to turn to you. What's more, [you should] come out in the open and say: The Viennese ought to learn to give before they think of taking. Besides, you would have nothing to expect from the Sch. — I have the letter to Prof. R. 2 ready, and should like to let you read it tomorrow. Midday 12.15 in the restaurant, later in the coffee-house.

Footnotes

1 Probably Frau von Goldschmidt, the widow of banker-composer Adalbert von Goldschmidt, who is mentioned again satirically in a letter of August 19 (OJ 6/4, [51]).

2 Possibly Professor Richard Robert, but perhaps more likely Professor Rettich, secretary to Alphons Rothschild, in view of Schenker's diary entry for April 13: "Nachmittag 3h. macht mir Prof. Rettich, den ich zufällig auf der Strasse treffe, Hoffnung auf Baron Alph.’ Förderung auch des II2." ("3 o'clock in the afternoon: Prof. Rettich, whom I encounter by chance on the street, gives me hope for Baron Alphons's support also for Counterpoint 2.").
