Heute morgens brachte mir die Post den ersten Halbband Ihres „Kontrapunkt“. ¹ Ich schnitt ihn gleich auf, um ein wenig darin zu blättern (wie ich es für’s erste gewöhnlich zu tun pflege); aber diese beabsichtigte flüchtige Durchsicht beim Frühstück wurde zu einer mehr als dreistündigen höchst genußreichen ² und anregenden Beschäftigung mit dem so überaus wertvollen ³ Buche und – sans phrase! – schweren Herzens trennte ich ⁴ mich davon, als mich meine Tagespflicht dazu zwang. Sehr wol tut es Einem heutzutage, wo Willkühr u. Anarchie in unserer geliebten Kunst herrschen und jeder musikalische Analphabet als „Individualität“ verherrlicht wird, in überzeugender Weise nachgewiesen zu sehen, daß es eben einige innere Gesetze in der Kunst gibt! Es hat mich dazu gedrängt, Ihnen, lieber Freund, ein Wort aufrichtiger und dankbarer Bewunderung ⁵ sofort zu sagen. Das Erscheinen des Buches werde ich vorerst „anzeigen“ und es, dann nachdem ich es durchgearbeitet habe, ausführlich besprechen. ⁶

This morning, the post delivered to me the first half-volume of your Counterpoint . ¹ I cut its pages immediately, so as to leaf through it a little (as I am wont to do on first sight); but what had been intended as a cursory leaf-through at breakfast turned into a highly enjoyable ² and exciting absorption in so utterly valuable ³ a book that it took more than three hours, and ‒ not to mince my words! ‒ I ⁴ had to tear myself away from it reluctantly as my day's responsibilities demanded. In an age when arbitrariness and anarchy reign over our beloved art, and every musical illiterate is hailed as an "individualist," it is a salutory thing to see someone demonstrate in convincing fashion that some inner laws do exist in music! I felt impelled immediately to send you, dear friend, a word of sincere and grateful admiration. ⁵ I will "announce" the publication of the book right away, and then, after I have worked through it, review it in detail. ⁶
