Dank für Ihren frdl. Zeilen.

Dear friend,

Thank you for your kind words. 1 As far as the “victory” is concerned, I am somewhat skeptical. “Understanding has always been granted only to a few” 2 and that will surely remain so. As concerns our musical Lessing from Fischergasse, he obviously knew nothing about my foray into his territory, and could in the meantime have addressed several letters of complaint to the Editor in Chief. To have been able to annoy these {recto} windbags and at the same time give you some enjoyment was a quite special treat for me!

With cordial greetings,

Footnotes

1 Seligmann must be thanking Schenker for praising his most recent feuilleton, "Aus dem Wiener Kunstleben," Neue Freie Presse, October 13, 1910, in which Seligmann pours scorn on a recent exhibition of the paintings of “the well-known and feared musician, Arnold Schoenberg … whose paintings look as if their creator hadn’t previously held a paintbrush in his hand until last week” (p. 2, col. 1). In the same article, he cites the Preface to Schenker’s Kontrapunkt 1, as an important statement on the present state of culture, and quotes extensively from it (p. 2, col. 3, and p. 3, col. 1).

2 The second line of the poem “Die Mehrheit?” by Friedrich Schiller.
