Footnotes1 Receipt of this picture postcard is not recorded in Schenker’s diary. 2 Wolf has presumably spent his vacation reading a long chapter of C. P. E. Bach’s Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen (Berlin, 1753, 1759, 1762). $21 (“The Five-four Chord” marks the end of chapter V, “Thoroughbass,” from which Wolf returns to the beginning of that chapter, §1 (“Intervals and their Signatures”). Schenker owned the one-volume edition by Gustav Schilling (5th edn, Berlin: Stage, 1856), which could well be what Wolf was reading. 3 Schenker inserts an emdash and continues without paragraph-break. |
