Sehr verehrter Herr Prf. Schenker! 1

Greatly revered Professor Schenker! 1

My vacation is passing [indecipherable word] as I rightly imagined it would. With the C. P. E. Bach, 2 I have arrived at §21, and am starting all over again from §1 in order now to study it in depth; this is a magnificent work, and I believe I have seen that the precepts and prohibitions fluctuate between strict counterpoint and free composition, and I believe also that I now see clearly the basis of the sequence of the individual large fields of study. 3

I wish you and your wife a happy time and a complete rest.

Your very devoted

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this picture postcard is not recorded in Schenker’s diary.

2 Wolf has presumably spent his vacation reading a long chapter of C. P. E. Bach’s Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen (Berlin, 1753, 1759, 1762). $21 (“The Five-four Chord” marks the end of chapter V, “Thoroughbass,” from which Wolf returns to the beginning of that chapter, §1 (“Intervals and their Signatures”). Schenker owned the one-volume edition by Gustav Schilling (5th edn, Berlin: Stage, 1856), which could well be what Wolf was reading.

3 Schenker inserts an emdash and continues without paragraph-break.
