FS 40/1, [20] - Handwritten letter from Schenker to Salzer, undated [January 8, 1934]
If you and your dear wife could come on Sunday the 14th or 21st to have tea with us with Mozart à la Toscanini on the gramophone, 2 you need only whisper a word in my ear on Friday the 12th 3 — it would be a great pleasure to see you both here. 4 I finished Der freie Satz yesterday at 11 o’clock, 5 more when we talk. With kindest greetings from us to both of you, © Translation Hedi Siegel, 2008 |

Footnotes1 The date of this undated letter can be deduced from Schenker’s diary at OJ 4/7, p. 3889, January 8, 1934: "An Dr. Salzer (Bf.): Einladung für Sonntag. ("To Dr. Salzer (letter): invitation for Sunday."); receipt of the reply is recorded at OJ 4/7, p. 3890, January 11: "Von Salzer (Br.): werden Sonntag kommen" ("From Salzer (letter): They will come on Sunday"). "1932 or 1933" is written in the top right corner in Dr. Salzer's hand. 2 This may be the Toscanini recording Schenker mentioned to Salzer in his letter of December 31, 1933 (FS 40/1, [19]). 3 Schenker saw Salzer every Friday, the day his seminar (comprising at the time Salzer, Greta Kraus, and Manfred Willfort) met in Schenker’s apartment. 4 The visit by the Salzers took place on Sunday, January 14, according to the diary entry for that date: "5–½8h Salzer u. Frau [...] Die Toscanini-Platte erweist die Unzulänglichkeit des Dirigenten, freilich – nur mir." ("5–7:30, Salzer and his wife ... The Toscanini recording demonstrates the inadequacy of the conductor, of course – only to me.") (OJ 4/7, p. 3890, partially transcribed in Federhofer, Heinrich Schenker nach Tagebüchern ... (1985), p. 259). 5 Schenker recorded in his diary at OJ 4/7, p. 3888, January 7, 1934: "Sonntag – Um 11h Abschluß der Notenbeispiele u. damit des ganzen satztechnischen Teiles – bin furchtbar abgemartert." ("Sunday ‒ at 11 o’clock, completion of the music examples, and with that of the entire part on compositional technique ‒ am utterly worn out."); he broke the news also to Oppel and Vrieslander on January 8 (OJ 4/7, p. 3889), and to Jonas, in a postcard on January 9 (OJ 5/18, 34). 6 This essay is unidentified. |
