River in the Veneto region of northern Italy, its mouth 30 km east of Venice. After the Austrian army's successful Battle of the Isonzo, which ended in November 1917, the Italian army fell back to the Piave. With French and British reinforcements, the Italians achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of the Piave River, June 15–23, 1918, forcing the Austrians to retreat, and causing many casualties. It was the last major offensive on the Italian front.
