Career summary

Second and seventh children respectively of Samuel Mendl and Babette (née Bettelheim), Heinrich and Fritz Mendl were initially suppliers of alcoholic beverages, coffee, and tea, but in 1891 founded Ankerbrot (=Anchor Bread, its symbol being the anchor), produced at the “Viennese Bread and Baked Goods Factory,” in the 10th district of Vienna; by 1914 this company had 1,300 employees, by 1920 2,000 employees and 100 branches, was aryanized in 1938 but continues into the 21st century.

Heinrich Mendl and Schenker

Schenker met Heinrich Mendl and his brother first on March 7, 1914 at the apartment of their sister Sofie Deutsch. Heinrich Mendl and Schenker had been in correspondence since three days earlier, apparently on a Schenker family matter; however, no correspondence between the two men is known to survive.
