Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for this day records: “Mrs. Colbert recounts her experiences with the Kolischer family in Ragusa [= Dubrovnik]. The impression that she took away with her was highly unfavorable. Here, just one example: Mrs. Kolischer asked her who was the best "person" from whom one could learn to play the piano, to which Mrs. Colbert replied: "Dr. Schenker"; and only now did Mrs. K. admit that her daughter is studying with me!! At the first instant it was clear to Mrs. Colbert, as she says, that she was dealing with a highly dubious Galician character. For that very reason she turned down an invitation from Mrs. Kolischer!”
