In Die Neue Rundschau published by Fischer we are struck by the diary kept by Tolstoy , ³ a flagellantism unmatched, aimless, helpless, not properly thought through, confused and confusing, and bearing witness to only one virtue: to be minded to do good. One [cannot] believe what harm is perpetrated by a mentality which, though intrinsically untenable, is nonetheless overwhelmed by so much skill and individual beauty – admittedly a beauty that is derived less from truth than from aspiration. — No one wants to read about world history, at least not the individual in his past.
