Footnotes1 On June 9, 1913, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838–1917) landed at the Aspern Airport, Vienna, on the airship Sachsen which he had built. The Viennese reacted with great excitement to the sight of the airship. Zeppelin was received by the Austrian emperor and received the "Order of Merit for Art and Science." Official speakers and newspaper columnists interpreted the visit in terms of the friendship and solidary between the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the German Reich.
