Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor!

I[h]r ergebener

Dear Director,

Returned herewith, with thanks, the copy checked and corrected. 1 A Table of Contents is currently being printed 2 : Will it be placed before the Foreword or at the end of the book? 3 I recommend the former. (The repetition of the Main Section runs to 424 bars. 4 ) In addition, I enclose a sheet for the typesetter, on which the most serious items 5 are clearly listed.

Please arrange if possible for the book to appear during Festival Week. 6 It would be highly advantageous.

With best wishes,
Your devoted

Footnotes

1 Presumably the complete set of proofs requested in WSLB 113, May 18, 1912.

2 Table of Contents: see WSLB 111, May 16, and WSLB 113, May 18, 1912.

3 The Table of Contents was placed directly after the Foreword.

4 Reference is to the first section of movement 2 of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Scherzo, in its restatement after the Trio (Main Section: 425 bb ‒ Trio: 117 bb ‒ Main Section: 424 bb).

5 "gravamina" (plur. of "gravamen"): Schenker uses a Latin legal term, meaning in that context "grievances," presumably to add import.

6 See also WSLB 98, March 4 and WSLB 113, May 18, 1912. Mahler's Ninth Symphony received its first performance under Bruno Walter (see WSLB 120, June 9) as part of the 1912 Vienna Musikfestwochen on June 26, 1912, and two evenings of modern music took place within the framework of the Vienna Music Festival Weeks on June 25 and 29, 1912, hence presumably June 23–29 was one of the weeks. Schenker’s book was issued on July 2, 1912.
