Footnotes1 This is the earliest known appearance of Reisnerstraße 38 in the Schenker correspondence. Schenker was living at Richardgasse 11 still at the end of June 1900 (OJ 9/20, [22]), so he must have moved during the summer of that year. This postcard shows both handwritten addresses: it would appear that Schenker had not notified d’Albert of his move, so the unknown hand that entered the latest address will probably have been that of the caretaker of Richardgasse 11, where it had arrived on September 5 and from where it had been delivered to Reisnerstraße 38 on September 8 (hence the presence of two Vienna postmarks). — There is a gap of just under two years since the previous surviving dated written communication between the two men. 2 From the first address and postmarks, it would seem that Schenker had been on vacation in Lunz, in Lower Austria, district Scheibbs. (No diary by Schenker for 1900 survives.) 3 Kain, opera, libretto by H. Bulthaupt, first performance Berlin, February 17, 1900. 4 Die Abreise, opera, libretto by F. von Sporck after A. von Steigentesch, first performance Frankfurt, October 20, 1898. |
