In ihrem Couvert fand ich 300 S. = 5 Stunden. 2 Das könnte ich allenfalls noch im Oktober annehmen, der 5 Stunden zählte. 3 Der gegenwärtige Monat ha bt aber nur 4 Stunden, folglich halte ich für Sie 60 S. bereit, die ich Ihnen am nächsten Freitag übergeben werde. Nicht einmal weiß ich übrigens, ob mir im Oktober das PHonorar für die fünfte (nicht genommene) Stunde 4 zukam, denn der Inhalt der Ab- {2} machungen des l. Hans mit Ihnen, mit H. In your envelope I found 300 shillings = 5 lessons. 2 I could perhaps have accepted this for October, in which there were five lesson dates. 3 In the present month, however, there are only four lesson dates; thus I am putting 60 shillings aside to give to you next Friday. Moreover, I don’t even know if in October the honorarium for the fifth (unheld) lesson 4 was due me, since I don’t know the nature of the {2} agreements dear Hans made with you, with Willfort, and with the two ladies; 5 in particular, I don’t know if such lessons should be counted as part of my course or should be excluded. © Translation Hedi Siegel, 2008 |

("To Salzer (letter): will send back 60 shillings in the near future."). 2 Schenker records in his diary at OJ 4/5, p. 3675, November 6, 1931: "Salzer legt das Couvert hin, es enthält S. 300? – er ist begeistert, die Idee sei 'ewig', aber – unerreichbar!" ("Salzer puts the envelope down; it contains 300 shillings?—he is enthusiastic: the idea is 'eternal' but – unattainable!"). 3 i.e., five Fridays: Salzer was part of the seminar that met on Fridays in Schenker’s apartment. This letter was written on the first Friday in November of 1931 (the four Fridays were the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th). 4 Schenker is most likely referring to October 2, the first Friday in October of 1931. The seminar did not begin meeting until the second Friday, according to Schenker’s diary entry for that day, October 9, 1931 (OJ 4/5, p. 3668): "Erste Seminarstunde." ("First seminar lesson.") 5 Trude Kral; Greta Kraus, members of the seminar along with Salzer and Manfred Willfort. They were all former students of Hans Weisse, who had left Vienna in 1931 to teach at the David Mannes Music School in New York. |
