Town in the Puster Valley 70km (43 miles) northeast of Bozen (Bolzano) and 80km (50 miles) due south of Kufstein, on the northern edge of the Dolomites. Before 1919 it was in South Tyrol, Schenker's favorite vacationing area; since 1919 it has formed part of Italy, only 5 km (3 miles) southwest of the Austrian border. In the summers of 1908‒10 Gustav Mahler composed his Ninth Symphony, Das Lied von der Erde, and his unfinished Tenth Symphony.
Schenker spent the summer of 1904 in Toblach, but his diary tells us nothing of his time there.
