Austrian composer, nicknamed the "Waltz King"; also conductor and violinist. He composed a large amount of dance music, including quadrilles, galops, and marches, but is best known for his waltzes, such as An der schönen blauen Donau (Blue Danube Waltz) and Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald (Tales of the Vienna Woods). Of equal importance were his many operettas, of which Die Fledermaus (1874) and Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gipsy Baron) (1885) are among the most famous.
