Career Summary

Librarian from 1900 at the Königliche Bibliothek in Berlin (which changed its name in 1918 to Preussische Staatsbibliothek), at which he was instrumental in founding the Deutsche Musik Sammlung; he succeeded Albert Kopfermann as Director of the Music Division there in 1915, remaining in post until 1927.

He wrote many handbooks and catalogs, and edited Wagner's correspondence, as well as editing many miniature scores.

Altmann was also a keen supporter of Schenker's Erläuterungsausgabe, and wrote a favorable review of the first Tonwille pamphlet.
