Footnotes ¹ At his March 30 lesson, fugal answers were examined in the Well-tempered Clavier as far as the Eę major fugue [of Book I]. — In later publications, Schenker adopted the German term Gefährte (lit. “companion”) in place of Latin comes for fugal answer, and Führer (lit. “leader”) in place of dux for “fugue subject.”
