1 Reference is to the Recitativo section of the third movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata, Op. 110. Schenker had received photographs of the “second autograph,” containing the Recitativo, Arioso dolente, and last movement, from Frankfurt the previous day, and had already shown it to Weisse on two successive days. As Schenker remarked in his diary, “It was the passage of recitative that first sprang to my eyes!” The diary for November 11 records: “First dictation for Op. 110!!”
