Footnotes1 The diary for this day reminds us that Schenker was still working on his Erläuterungsausgabe of Op. 110, published in December 1914: “A rather energetic revision of Op. 110! Completion of thoroughbass according to C. P. E. Bach.” — The entry continues: “Weisse asks me about the amount of the lesson fee – apparently he had the idea of a reduction in mind. The idea was greedy enough, the manner of execution even greedier. Evidently his greed stumbles, in addition, over a lack of logic: he wished to imagine, that is, that a single teacher, in consideration of the oneness of myself, would undertake a reduction in the lesson fee; and in that very point his illogicality prevails, since the pupil is demanding no fewer than two distinct accomplishments from me as that one teacher. And, instead of thinking of the different achievements for which he would have to pay two teachers in full, in my case it is easier for him, as a vassal to his vanity and greed, to see the one person rather than the two accomplishments. His greed has thus lodged itself in this illogicality.” 2 Sometime that day after his lesson, Weisse wrote Schenker a letter praising his clarity of expression and lucidity of analysis; however, he names the work in question as Op. 109 (OJ 15/16, [21]. |
