Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for November 2 records: “Mrs. Deutsch recently gives a sample of her incorrigible money-grubbing nature; she sticks to her cheaper lesson fee, even though she knows the true, higher amount and disseminates it herself. She is, moreover, so bold as to display her utter beggarliness on the very same day that she offers me a present; but since giving presents is unbefitting to a beggar, I have sent a letter turning down her offer of a Christmas present.”
