In letzterem bestätige ich die verlässlichen Resultate, sowie die gute Darstellung u. nehme die Polemik des Verfassers zum Anlass, die Wichtigkeit einer solchen neuerdings zu demonstrieren. Es muß vor Allem die Eitelkeit im Menschen erschlagen werden. Die Welt wäre ein Paradies, wenn gegen die Wahrheit blos der Irrtum stände! In der Tat ist Roth’s Darstellung des Bach’schen Variationen-Werkes ¹ als eine in den Hauptpunkten u. meisten Nebenpunkten ganz gelungene Arbeit zu bezeichnen, wie denn auch die Polemik als wertvoller Behelf zur Ergänzung des Vorgebrachten gelten darf.

In the latter I confirm his solid results, and also his good presentation; and I use the author's polemics as an occasion to demonstrate once again the importance of such a thing. Above all, the vanity of people must be slain. The world would be a paradise if only errors stood in opposition to the truth! In fact, Roth's account of Bach's set of variations ¹ should be described as an entirely successful piece of work, in its main points and most of its secondary points; and his polemics may be viewed also as a valuable aid to completing his presentation.
