Bei einem Abendspaziergang durch die Stadt fällt es auf, wie rasch auch Wien sich amerikanisiert u. wie alle Kaufläden sich dem Leitmotiv dieser Tage, eben dem eucharistischen Kongress, im großen u. kleinen anzupassen versuchen. Ob Jude oder Christ, alles bringt religiöse Gegen- {225} stände in die Schaufenster: bei Wäsche, Teppichen, Büchern u. s. f. On an evening stroll through the city, we are struck by how quickly even Vienna has become Americanized, and how all the shops attempt to fit in with the leitmotive of the day, i.e. the Eucharistic Congress, at every level. Whether Jewish or Christian, all display religious items {225} in all the shop windows: clothes, carpets, books, etc. The hoteliers have shown the greatest conviction by decorating [the hotel facades] with flags. 1 *Day of judges, day of jurists, day of draftsman, Eucharistic Congress, 2 catechists … and yet it grows dark, in spite of so many days! *© Translation William Drabkin. |
