1911 Das Ornament bereitet auf die Öffnung in der Mauer sinnvoll vor; der
Beschauer hätte sonst, wenn das Fenster ohne Ornament wäre, nur den Eindruck einer von
außen gewaltsam, wie von Einbrecherhand gebrochenen Lücke; durch das Ornament hindurch
genießt also der Beschauer von außen die Wohltat der Maueröffnung, wie sie von innen nun
auch der Bewohner selbst genießt. Das Ornament befreit somit unsere Vorstellung des
Fensters von Nebenvorstellungen eines leidigen Zufalls, einer Bosheit u.s.w. gegen Auge
u. Wimper Architekt Loos

⇧ Window and Ornament.
1911 Ornament prepares an opening in a wall meaningfully. Otherwise, if the
window were without ornament, the observer would have the impression only of a hole
created by force from the outside, as if by a burglar. By means of ornament, from the
outside the observer thus enjoys the expediency of a wall opening, just as the occupant
himself does from the inside. Consequently ornament frees our apprehension of the window
from kindred notions of an unfortunate accident, a malicious act, etc., which offends
the eye [of] architect
[Adolf] Loos.

3 This is no doubt Schenker's reaction to the completion in June/July 1911
of the Goldman & Salatsch Building in the Michaelerplatz in central Vienna,
designed by Adolf Loos, the facades of which caused controversy by their plainness
and the absence of any ornamental treatment of the rectilinear
windows.
