Aufführung außerordentlich rein u. nobel, eine allerhöchste Art von Kammermusik; Bläser verhalten sich zum Streichercorps nun wirklich al pari!

Thursday, March 26
[edited by Schenker: final version only given here:]

3 p.m. Rehearsal for the celebratory performance of Haydn's The Seasons (100-year commemoration) in the aula of the old University. 1 The room inexpressibly elegant, the lighting a marvel of discretion; small orchestra: six first violins, four seconds, two contrabasses, etc.: the effect of the performance extraordinarily pure and noble, the most elevated sort of chamber music; the winds relate to the body of strings to [produce] a genuine equilibrium!

In the evening, Bum, Stolz, Floriz and Dohnányi. 2 I am plagued by nervousness during the concert. — Up until 2 a.m. in company ‒ also of Dohnányi. Boredom.

Footnotes

1 This concert took place, according to the Neue freie Presse of March 27, 1908, p. 14, on that date at 7.30 p.m. in the aula of the Academy of Sciences (the former old university building). Conducted by Franz Schalk with the chorus and orchestra of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, the soloists were Leonore Bach (soprano), Johannes Messchaert (baritone) and Felix Senius (tenor), with Eusebius Mandyczewski at the harpsichord. (See footnote to the entry for March 29 for Schenker's performance remarks.) The Neue freie Presse of March 28, pp. 13‒14, carried an extended review of the event, which marked the exact centenary of a performance attended by Haydn in a "concert for aristocratic amateurs" in the old University on March 27, 1808; seats were reserved for invited members of the Imperial Household and the aristocracy.

2 This concert took place, according to the Neue freie Presse, at 7.30 p.m. on March 26, 1908, in the Bösendorfer Recital Hall, with Margarete Bum (mezzo-soprano), Eugenie Stolz (cello), and Moriz Violin (piano), under the direction of Ernö von Dohnányi. The program is not given. See diary entries for March 23 and 25 regarding Bum and Stolz. The cause of Schenker's "nervousness" is unclear.
