Beginn des großen Kulturkampfes in Frankreich !

[in left margin:] (K. d. [“] da muß freilich jede Antwort, jede Berechtigung verstummen!

Beginning of the great cultural war in France!

[in left margin:] ( Art of Performance ) 1 Concert Union: 2 Reisenauer plays Beethoven's Piano Concerto in Eę major: much of the time strict, inflexible, but not without now and again coming close [to what it should be]. But the middle movement proves unsuccessful, primarily through neglect of the inner (or arpeggiating voices (left hand), which leads to impoverishment of the melody itself. ‒ Haydn's D major Symphony yet again performed too fast; contrary to that, Löwe's authoritative pronouncement: "Nowhere is Haydn's music played as it is in the Concert Society" ‒ any response to that, any correction, must of course remain unspoken!

Footnotes

1 This marginal note (like that for December 6) suggests that Schenker was flagging this entry for possible use in the work that he was planning, Die Kunst des Vortrags , but of which he did not produce a first written draft until 1911. The handwriting is clearly contemporaneous with the entry itself.

2 This concert by the Vienna Concert Society under Ferdinand Löwe took place, according to the Neue freie Presse, at 8 p.m. on December 12 in the large hall of the Musikverein Building. The program comprised the first Vienna performance of E. N. von Reznicek's Symphony in Bę major ("Sinfonietta"), Beethoven, Piano Concerto in Eę major ("Emperor") with pianist Alfred Reisenauer of Leipzig, Hugo Wolf, Italian Serenade, and Haydn, Symphony No. 104 in D major.
