Footnotes1 The marginal "?" denotes Schenker's uncertainty as to date; but he subsequently deleted it without substituting a date. — The Hague Convention of 1899, May 18‒July 29, laid down laws and customs of war and established a permanent court of arbitration. The Neue freie Presse of May 18 devotes part of its pp. 1‒2 to extended coverage ("Zur Eröffnung der Friedensconferenz"), hence the tentative editorial dating. — In Jeanette's fair copy, the heading has been moved to the end and prefaced by "Zur" inserted in pencil, but without the "Die" being canceled (it has here been silently deleted editorially). Schenker's initial draft (before his alterations) perhaps works more pungently: "Die Friedenkonferenz in Haag. Militär abrüsten? Ließe sich vorerst nur der Haß abrüsten!" ("The Peace Conference in the Hague: To disarm militarily? Let just hatred first disarm itself!"). |
