J. G. COTTA’SCHE BUCHHANDLUNG NACHFOLGER
STUTTGART UND BERLIN

STUTTGART, den 30. Dez. 1908.

Herrn Dr. H. Schenker Wien III
Reisnergasse [sic] 38

Hochgeehrter Herr! 1

SUCCESSORS TO J. G. COTTA'S BOOK DEALERSHIP
STUTTGART AND BERLIN

STUTTGART, December 30, 1908

Dr. H. Schenker Vienna III
Reisnergasse [sic] 38

Revered Sir, 1

We have so far still not received back from you any of galley-proofs 1–89 of volume II of your work that we have been sending you in batches since the beginning of November, 2 as a result of which the printers can, for lack of type, go no further with type-setting. We therefore ask you very kindly to send us back urgently as large as possible a proportion of the galleys corrected, so that the pages can be made up for gatherings of revised proofs, and after being checked can be printed off as a run of gatherings. 3 {2} With the type freed up in so doing, type-setting would then be resumed.

With kind regards,

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. Cotta's carbon copy is CA 90.

2 Evidence of the flow of galley-proofs comes from correspondence with Universal Edition: WSLB 24, October 31, 1908: "Soeben sind die ersten Korrekturen meines II. Kontrapunktbandes von Cotta eingelaufen, ....." ("The first proofs of my second Counterpoint volume have just started coming in from Cotta [...]"); WSLB 31, December 22, 1908: "[...] die Korrekturen meines Bd. II augenblicklich im Vordergrunde stehen. Cotta stürmt, u. dennoch werden wir Mühe haben, zu Ostern den Bd. II herauszubringen." ("[...] the proofs of my volume II are currently in the forefront of my mind. Cotta is harrying [me], and even so we will have trouble getting volume II out at Easter.").

3 That is, the type-setters' stocks of elements of metal type (individual letters) have run low, and only once the galley-proofs have been approved and pages made up as plates can the galleys be dismantled and the type-elements be reused for the next set of galley-proofs.
