Mir geht das Alles längst über meine Vorstellung, ich verstehe nicht, wie im Reich die Menschen überhaupt noch leben können! Ich hätte so Manches zu schreiben, aber ich muß erst wissen, daß ich nicht gegen deine Nerven, deine Lage verstoße, daß du zu so etwas überhaupt noch Zeit hast. It has long since surpassed my imagination: I cannot begin to understand how people in the [German] Empire can go on living! I have so much that I could write, but I must first know that I shall not infringe upon your nerves, your situation, in case you have no time at all for something like this. If all that you can write is "[we are] all right, in good health," that would be enough for me, and I shall write immedately.
