Dear Friend: 1

Thank you for [your] kind letter. 2 Unfortunately I cannot accept to be judge in a composition contest.

[in English:] Dear Friend, 1

Thank you for [your] kind letter. 2 Unfortunately I cannot accept to be judge in a composition contest. [in German:] Continuing in German: Above all, my eyes, which just at this very moment have very much let me down. But I could [not], secondly, sacrifice the small amount of time that remains to me for work, 3 for such an arduous task. It is, thirdly, a very arduous task, especially so because I have absolutely no yardstick with which to judge American music. Besides: 1 (ONE) prize of $1,000 is not overly generous. He should set up at least three prizes.

As regards Sessions, please don't be impatient. He is really someone who would be prepared to help. I would perhaps rather give him a call and ask. It is, however, unfortunately possible that he has not been able to achieve anything [for you], and in such cases Americans are not accustomed to writing – I have often been annoyed by that. But he may perhaps not wield enough power.

Have you heard his symphony? Did you like it, and are you in a position to say something complimentary to him about it.

Let me know the outcome.

With most cordial greetings, also from my wife,

I am your

Footnotes

1 The original of this item was given to the Oswald Jonas Memorial Collection by Eva Violin Windsor after 1978. An unsigned carbon copy of this letter survives as LC ASC 7/50, [19]. This is the last known item of correspondence from Schoenberg to Violin, and as such the conclusion on his side of an exchange of letters and postcards spanning forty-eight years. – One trivial mistyping has been silently corrected.

2 = LC ASC 27/45, [36].

3 Schoenberg died on July 13, 1951.
