I didn't want to say it in front of G.: 2 it would only have made you believe everything. For in truth it remains a question of the delusion of making progress "in the direction of modernity." The fools are for ever convinced by the epigonism of a Brahms and the progress-art of a Zemlinsky. That alone is the crux of the matter! More power to you! They will one day understand even this, but [by then] it will be too late for the talented ones of the future. More tomorrow.
