Ich habe heute mit Hertzka ein glänzendes Geschäft gemacht, u. zw. pro futuro ein sehr glänzendes. Ich trug ihm sämtliche 5 Toccaten an ‒ : „Ja“ Er kam wieder auf „Erläuterungen“ zurück à la Busoni , da habe ich plötzlich in schlauester Art die Sprache auf die „ chromatische Ph. “ gebracht, um diese Arbeit, die ich schon fertig habe, anzubringen; er überraschenderweise wieder: „Ja“ trotzdem er einmal gerade dieses Werk im Hinblick auf Bülow’s u. Busoni’s Arbeiten bereits abgelehnt hat. ² Er sistiert die Ausgabe Busoni , die auf dem Herbstplan stand, u. läßt mir den Vortritt. Preisstipulation . . Ich: 200 Kr.: ³ Er: „Ja“. Es sind 9 Seiten, da wollte ich nicht weiter gehen, ‒ ich habe im Augenblick bedacht, daß die Toccaten schon in Auftrag stehen, wo ich ja bis 800 Kr. zu sehen haben werde, u. es auch sonst richtig ist, den Kaufmann zuerst verdienen zu lassen, um ihn erst dann auf die Schlachtbank zu führen. Sie würden {2} mir ja niemals diese Preise concedieren, wenn nicht schon die früheren Arbeiten von mir ihnen welche Vorteile gebracht hätten. Mäßig ‒ unmässig ‒ u.s.w. cresc.

Nun aber, bitte, bringe mir morgen das Geld. Du giebst es aus, u. wir sitzen beide dann auf. U. zw. gieb mir 200 Fl., d.h. 150 Fl. Im Herbst erhältst du eben 100 Fl. sofort von der U. E. zurück, u. die 50 Fl. im Laufe der Stundenjahr mit Leichtigkeit.

Today I have made a splended deal with Hertzka, what's more a very splendid deal for the future. I offered him a set of five toccatas: "Yes." He brought up again "elucidations" in the manner of Busoni. Then I quickly and craftily brought the talk round to the Chromatic Fantasy in order to couple that work, which I have ready to go, [to the five toccatas]. Surprisingly, he again [said:] "Yes", despite his having already once rejected this very work in favor of Bülow's and Busoni's editions. ² He puts a stop on the Busoni edition, which was in the autumn prospectus, and gives me precedence. Stipulation on price: I [say] "200 Kronen"; ³ he [responds] "Yes." There are nine pages: I didn't want to go any further. At that moment I thought the toccatas were already [as good as] contracted, for which I can expect to see as much as 800 Kronen, and it is only right to let the merchant earn [his portion] first, in order only thereafter to lead him to the slaughtering block. They would {2} surely never concede these prices to me if my earlier works had not already yielded them some advantages. Moderato ‒ non moderato, etc.; crescendo.

But now, please bring me the money tomorrow. If you spend it, we'll both be in trouble. So give me 200 Florins, i.e. 150 Florins. In the fall you will get just 100 Florins back promptly from Universal Edition, and the 50 Florins in the course of the teaching year with ease.

Don't forget! Tomorrow: money!
