Footnotes

1 Writing of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/5, p. 3679, January 14, 1932: "An v. Cube (K.): bitte um die Notiz aus der Frankf. Ztg." ("To von Cube (postcard): I ask for the notice from the Frankfurter Zeitung").

2 Since the most recent known letter from von Cube is OJ 9/34, [29], dated October 20, 1931, and Schenker had written to von Cube in the November/December, 1931 (OJ 5/7a, [40]), it seems likely that the letter referred to here is not known to survive.

3 In Schenker's scrapbook (OC 2), a short newspaper article by Ludwig Rottenberg, headed "Für das klingende Meisterwerk!" and probably written in response to the publication of vol. 3 of Das Meisterwerk in der Musik, has been pasted onto p. 85. It is identified, in Cube's hand, as from the "Frankf. Ztg. 19.12.31" (Frankfurter Zeitung, December, 19, 1931) and must therefore be the article to which Schenker is referring to here. Ludwig Rottenberg (1864–1932) was a pupil of the musicologist Eusebius Mandyczewski, and also Hindemith's father-in-law. Schenker was in contact with him in the late 1920s. See Federhofer, Heinrich Schenker, nach Tagebüchern und Briefen (Hildesheim: Georg Olms, 1985), p. 153.
