Meinen herzlichsten Dank für die liebenswürdige Zusendung des S. Saëns -Artikels, der mich sehr interessiert hat. 1 Auch ich mache augenblicklich dankbar schönste Erfahrungen mit einem 2 , aus Frankfurt a/M. mir zugekommenen Autograph ad op. 110. 2 Vielleicht entschließt sich die „ U.E. “ zur Herausgabe der „ IX Sinf. “ auf Grunde des Autographs. 3 So billig die Hausphotographie der Kgl. Bibliothek in Berlin arbeitet, würde es mir doch willkommen, die „ U.E. “ die Kosten der Photographie tragen zu lassen. 4

Nicht wahr, Sie kommen bald? Denn sollen Sie meine jüngsten Schätze an {2} Autographen u. Skizzen bewundern u. noch mehr die Resultate genießen, die aber erst sie eröffnet haben.

Verzeihen Sie alle Hast, aber ich werde derart von „Gegenstimmen“ contrapunktiert, daß ich nicht die Gelassenheit einer cantus-firmus-Note aufbringen kann. Dieser Vergleich hinkt durchaus nicht.

Revered and dear Mrs. [Pairamall],

My most sincere thanks for your having kindly sent the Saint Saëns article, which has interested me greatly. 1 At the moment I too am thankfully having a most delightful time working on a second autograph of Op. 110, which has just reached me from Frankfurt am Main. 2 Perhaps Universal Edition will decide to publish the Ninth Symphony [score] on the basis of the autograph. 3 Inexpensively though the photography department of the Royal Library in Berlin does its work, I should be glad if Universal Edition would bear the cost of the photography. 4

Is it true that you are returning soon? Then you shall admire my latest treasures of {2} autographs and sketches, and enjoy even more the results, which, however, they have only just revealed.

Forgive me for all my haste, but I have become so counterpointed by “counter melodies” that I cannot muster the composure of a cantus-firmus note. This is absolutely not a lame comparison.

1 Writing of this letter is recorded in Schenker’s diary for November 12, 1913: “Brief, an Frau Pairamall; Dank für Einsendung des November-Heftes von S. I. M., worin Saint-Saëns über die IX. Sinfonie auf Grund des Autographs berichtet.” (“Letter to Mrs. Pairamall; thanks for sending the November issue of the S. I. M., in which Saint-Saëns reports on the Ninth Symphony on the basis of the autograph.”) The article by Saint-Saëns is "Les manuscrits de la bibliothèque de Berlin," Revue musicale S. I. M. vol. 9, No. 11 (November 1913), 2–7.

2 On November 4, 1913, Schenker recorded in his diary: “Ankündigung des 2. Autographs aus Frankfurt.” (“Notification from Frankfurt about the second autograph manuscript”); and on November 10: “Aus Frankfurt langt das 2. Autograph op. 110 an. [. . .]” (“From Frankfurt, the second autograph manuscript of Op. 110 arrives. [. . .]”) — This autograph, which was in the collection of Louis Koch and is now in the Beethovenhaus, Bonn, includes the Adagio, Arioso dolente, and Fugue of Op. 110.

3 First talk of an edition of the score of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to accompany Schenker’s monograph Beethovens neunte Sinfonie (Vienna: UE, 1912) occurred on June 21, 1911 (WSLB 77), after which discussion continued over the following year, and Emil Hertzka negotiated the adoption of the plates of the Eulenburg edition; but when in 1913 it became clear to Universal Edition that Schenker intended to modify that edition according to the readings in the autograph manuscript (OC 52/440, December 12, 1913; OC 52/138, January 5, 1914; WSLB 199, January 7, 1914) , the plan was dropped.

4 Schenker addressed the cost of the photography in a letter to Hertzka of the same day as the present letter (WSLB 192).
