Footnotes

1 Receipt of this note is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/7, p. 3966, January 2, 1935: "Von Willfort (Billet): Wünsche u. Dank." ("From Willfort (note): best wishes, and thanks."). This is the last reference to Willfort in Schenker's diary, and the note contains the last words of Willfort that Schenker read.

2 "eight years": Willfort is recorded in Schenker's lessonbooks only between October 9, 1931 and May 23, 1932 (no lesson notes exist beyond the second week of June 1932), most or all meetings being as part of Schenker's Friday Seminar. The seminar continued to the end of the 1933/34 season, i.e. June 1934. Prior to October 1931 he was apparently a student of Hans Weisse: Weisse made a list of his own students in 1925 in which Willfort was not included; Willfort's remark here suggests that he became a student of Weisse's c.1927 (thanks to William Drabkin for this information).
