Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/6, p. 3826, April 14, 1933: "Von Wilfort (Br. durch Botin): fragt ob ich heute empfange?!? antworte: „ja“ – schreibt „sehr geehrter Herr Doktor“ – nichts von Verehrung oder Dank. " ("From Wilfort (letter, sent by messenger): asks whether I would receive [students] today?!? I reply, "Yes." – He writes "Dear Dr.," nothing about reverence or gratitude."). This modest entry reveals just how punctilious Schenker was in relations with his pupils, and how demanding of tribute from them ‒ even in so routine a collective message as this. — This envelope does not conclusively belong to this letter. It is included here because it carries no stamp or postmark, and therefore is likely to belong to the only letter known to have been delivered by messenger. |
