OJ 15/16, [13] - Handwritten letter from Weisse to Schenker, dated February 11, 1913
© Transcription William Drabkin, 2007 |
Just now, as I was walking home along the street after being with you, all manner of ideas running through my head, the following thought came to me! I hope, and feel, that my power of synthesis has matured, my desire to compose has now reached its boiling point ‒ and the fact that I am young will insure that nobody can say I have squandered my powers. How would it be if I were to set about the first movement of my Quintet 2 and compose a new one? How would it be if I were thus to dispense with the disgraceful existing movement? You cannot imagine how that would excite me, dear Master, and if it were to succeed, how proud I would be! {2} Should you have a spare moment, do write a few words to me on the subject! I would be most grateful to you for this, with heartfelt greetings [signed:] Hans Tuesday, February 11, 1913 © Translation Alison Hiley, 2007 |

Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. 2 Weisse first announced that he was working on a string quintet on July 7, 1912 (OJ 15/16, [6]), after which it continued to be referred to in letters and in Schenker's lessonbooks, where it was under discussion in 1913 as late as February 7 ("questions arising from the quintet") and February 11 ("on the ordering of the adagio in the quintet"). |
