1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker’s diary for August 21, 1925: “Von Hammer (Br.): in einer Rolle auch ein Probeabzug des Bildes; er erklärt, noch unzufrieden zu sein. Bleibt bis 26. d. in Wien, dann in St. Martin – Lie Liechen ist sehr zufrieden mit dem Bild. (“From Hammer (letter): in a roll, also a test proof of the portrait; he declares that he is still dissatisfied. He will stay in Vienna until the 26th of this month, then [he will be] in St. Martin. – Lie-Liechen is very satisfied with the portrait.”)

Proofs of the several states of the portrait are described by Ulrich Middeldorf in Victor Hammer: Artist and Printer, compiled by Carolyn R. Hammer (Lexington, Kentucky: The Anvil Press, 1981); see chapter 1, "Mezzotints," p. 22 (Catalogue, No. 6) and pp. 34–35 (plates 6a and 6b). Plate 6a (London, 1925) shows a somewhat less stylized depiction than the final state; it most likely represents the test proof Hammer sent to Schenker.
