Gestern bekam ich endlich die Korrektur-Exemplare vom Philharmonischen Verlag. 2 Ich hoffe, Sie können Ihren Willen wieder herstellen. Sonst steht Ihnen das Faksimile zu Diensten. Ueber den Neffen 3 brauchen wir kein Wort zu verlieren. Er ist die lyrische Ausgabe des heldischen Onkel, aber vom Stamme jener Asra, welche st…, wenn sie lieben. Und nun folgt auch der Balzac-Band, aus dem ich Ihnen die erste und dritte Novelle zur Beachtung empfohlen habe. 4 Den Brief der Kalmücke lege ich bei. 5 Die Neuauflage schickt er sicher. Darin sind sie grosszügig. Haas hat an die Ravag geschrieben, aber Ihr Wort ist sicher für die Sache von Wert. Wenn Sie über Braunstein 6 schweigen, so nehme ich an, dass er Ihnen nichts gesagt hat. Auch Dr. Jolles wird verstehen, dass der „freie Satz“ jetzt wichtiger ist. Aber hoffentlich kommen Sie auf die Diabelli-Variationen zurück, die er gelegentlich in Wien (Urania?) spielen will. 7 Ich möchte, das er – der Schubert wirklich textlich kennt (alles gespielt und gelesen hat von der Gesamt-Ausgabe), bei meinem Schubert-Zyklus im Radio mittut: zwei- und vierhändig. ⇧ 3 Bände (1 leihweise). 1 Brief (Papierkorb). © Transcription William Drabkin, 2023 |
Yesterday I finally received the copies with revisions from the Philharmonic Publishing House. 2 I hope that you can establish your will again. Otherwise the facsimile is available for consultation. Regarding your nephew, 3 we need not waste any words. He is the lyrical issue of his heroic uncle, but from the stem of those Asras who st[eal] when they love. And now follows the volume of Balzac, too, from which I have recommended to you the first and third novellas. 4 I am enclosing the letter from Kalmosquito. 5 He will surely send you the new edition; in that respect the publishers are generous. Haas has written to Austrian Radio, but your word is surely of value for the matter. If you are keeping silent about Braunstein, 6 then I assume that his book has meant nothing for you. Dr. Jolles, too, will understand that Free Composition is now important. But I hope that you will return to the "Diabelli" Variations, which he wants to perform some time in Vienna (at the Urania?). 7 As he knows Schubert textually very well – he has played and read everything from the collected edition – I would like him to participate in my Schubert cycle on the radio: piano two- and four-hands. Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter (with additional material) is recorded in Schenker’s diary for December 2, 1927: “Spät abends von Deutsch durch einen Boten zwei Exemplare von Kalmus, das meine sowohl wie ein neues, worin meine Zeichen wiederholt sind. Dazu ein Brief von Kalmus an Deutsch [OJ 71/19, [1]], in dem er ihn u. mich um Entschuldigung bittet u. ein Brief von Deutsch an mich mit der Wendung über Kalmus, daß “sie stehlen, wenn sie lieben” – u. ein Bändchen Balzac ‘Künstler u. Narren’” (“In the late evening, from Deutsch via a messenger, two copies from Kalmus, mine and a new one into which my markings have been copied. In addition, a letter from Kalmus to Deutsch [OJ 71/19, [1]] in which he offers his apologies to him and me; and a letter from Deutsch to me with the saying applicable to Kalmus, that those “who love, steal” – and a little volume by Balzac entitled Artists and Fools. 2 Schenker’s original revised score of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony, which served as a revised edition for the Wiener Philharmonischer Verlag, and a duplicate copy. 3 Probably Schenker’s nephew Georg, a talented musician. Schenker began teaching him on December 5, 1927. “Asra” seems to be a code-name for Georg’s mother (Schenker’s sister-in-law), Lisl. Neither has been mentioned in recent Deutsch-Schenker correspondence. 4 This volume probably included the stories Gambara and Massimila Doni, in which the music of Beethoven and Rossini, respectively, are discussed at some length. 5 OJ 70/19, [1], dated November 30, 1927.
