Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 3/2, p. 2296 (November 15, 1920): "Von Deutsch (K.): ladet zur Besichtigung eines Beethovenschen Korrekturblattes zu op. 106." ("From Deutsch (postcard): invites [me] to examine a page of corrections by Beethoven to Op. 106.") 2 Correction sheets for the "Hammerklavier" Sonata survive in Bonn (one leaf), Cambridge (four leaves) and Trier (a fragment of a leaf); Deutsch is probably referring to the Bonn leaf. Together these leaves form a letter sent by Beethoven to Ferdinand Ries in London on March 19, 1819. This letter is no. 1295 in Beethoven Briefwechsel Gesamtausgabe, ed. Sieghard Brandenburg (Munich: Henle, 1996), and no. 939 in The Letters of Beethoven, ed. Emily Anderson (London: Macmillan, 1961). |
