Herzlichen 1 Dank für Ihre freundliche Karte 2 und den ausführlichen Wiener Brief. 3 Ich freue mich, dass Sie dort alles Gute finden. Gern will ich, wenn es mir irgendein möglich gemacht wird, für einige Tage dorthin kommen. Wollen Sie nur die Güte haben mir zu schreiben, wie lange Sie bestimmt dort bleiben! Mitte August würde ich wohl kommen können. Ich sehne mich sehr danach, Sie endlich einmal zu sehen und zu sprechen. Denn ich habe viel zu fragen, jetzt mehr dann je. Certainly I would like to come for a few days, if it could somehow be made possible for me. Could you please be so kind, though, as to tell me how long you will definitely be staying there? I would definitely be able to come mid-August. I long to finally see you and speak with you. I have so much to ask, even more now than before. ("From Dahms (postcard): hopes to be able to come mid-August."). 2 This postcard is not known to survive. His diary records at OJ 2/14, p. 2098, July 9, 1919: "An Vrieslander u. Dahms Karten mit Adresse, erste Eindrücke u. Einladung." ("To Vrieslander and Dahms, postcards with address, first impressions, and invitation.") . 3 This letter is not known to survive, but its writing is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 2/14, p. 2087, on June 29, 1919: "An Dahms (Br.): danke für Gratulation; bestätige ihm seine Ansicht über das persönliche Glück der zur Synthese Geborenen; leider habe der Weltkrieg solche Genies mit Ausnahme zweier Menschen nicht hervorbringen können; Welteselei-Krieg; dabei freilich tragisch, bei den Feinden Eselei mit Schurkerei, bei den Deutschen ohne letztere! Dringende Pflicht, die Werkzeuge des Geistes wieder auf den Stand des XVIII. Jahrhunderts zu bringen, vor allem westliches Barbarentum abtun; möchte Wien verlassen; endlich etwas über II2 u. mein eigenes Urteil darüber." ("To Dahms (letter): thanks for congratulations; confirm him in his opinion about the personal good fortune of those born to synthesis; sadly the World War was unable to produce such geniuses with the exception of two men [i.e. Hindenburg and Ludendorf]; war of worldwide stupidity; at the same time admittedly tragic, on the part of the enemies stupidity combined with villainy, on the part of the Germans just the former! Pressing duty once again to produce the instruments of the spirit up to the level of the 18th century, above all to dispose of western barbarity; I should like to get away from Vienna; at the end, something about II/2 and my judgment on that."). |
