Sehr geehrter Herr! 1

Dear Sir, 1

I have read your esteemed letter with great interest, but must reply to my regret that [the autograph manuscripts of Beethoven’s] Op. 101 and 106 2 have not come into my possession, and that I am not presently in a position to tell you who currently owns them. I have, however, immediately taken steps so as perhaps to get to know; and in the event of success, I will permit myself to give you [?further] news within the next week.

With very best regards,

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker’s diary OJ 1/13, p. 481, December 3, 1913: "Antwort von Meinert u. postwendend Dank an ihn." ("Reply from Meinert and thanks to him by return."). Although this and OC B/281 are the only two letters from Meinert to Schenker known to be extant, earlier correspondence is implied by a diary entry of November 22, 1913, OJ 1/13, p. 473: "Brief an Hertzka mit beiliegenden Brief v. Kopfermann u. einem Meinert-Brief." ("Letter to Hertzka enclosing a letter from Kopfermann and one from Meinert.")

2 On Schenker’s search for these and other autograph manuscripts of Beethoven’s late piano sonatas, see Nicholas Marston, Heinrich Schenker and Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier’ Sonata (Farnham: Ashgate, 2013), Chapter 1.
