Mit ¹ Vorliegendem bestätige ich, mit Ihnen folgende Abmachung getroffen zu haben:

1.) Ich übergebe Ihnen das Verlags- und Uebersetzungsrecht der von mir in Angriff genommenen Neuherausgaben sämtlicher Klaviersonaten von Beethoven, deren Revision und Fingersatz ich nach den zur Zeit überhaupt erreichbaren Autographen, Skizzen und Erstdrucken besorgen werde.

2.) Ich verpflichte mich, jeder Sonate eine Einführung beizugeben und die sämtlichen notwendigen Korrekturabzüge auf das Genaueste zu lesen.

3.) Die Herausgabe wird auf Grundlage der in Ihrem Verlag vorhandenen Platten vorgenommen werden.

4.) Von der kompletten Bandausgabe der Sonaten bezahlen Sie mir eine Tantieme von 40 Pfg. i. W. vierzig Pfennig, von der Ausgabe in mehreren Bänden, die einem jeden Band entsprechende Teiltantieme (also in zwei Bänden à zwanzig Pfennig, in drei Bänden à dreizehneindrittel Pfennig). Die Tantieme für die Einzelausgaben wird in der Weise berechnet, dass ich für jede einzelne Sonate eine Tantieme von fünf Pfennig erhalte.

5.) Sie räumen mir das Recht ein, unter den gleichen Bedingungen auch die Klaviersonaten von Haydn und Mozart herauszugeben.

{2} 6.)Die Abrechnung hat halbjährlich in den Monaten Jänner und Juli eines jeden Jahres zu erfolgen und ist mir das entfallende Honorar zu diesen Terminen bar auszubezahlen.

7.) Nachdem über die letzten fünf Sonaten Beethovens andere Abmachungen existieren, so wird sich Ihre Tantiemenverpflichtung auf diese letzten fünf Sonaten nicht beziehen, sondern nur auf die übrigen 27 Sonaten. Ich bin jedoch trotzdem verpflichtet, auch diese fünf Sonaten im Rahmen der Gesamtausgabe einer Durchsicht zu unterziehen, damit sie sich in die Gesamtordnung einfügen.

8.) Diese Abmachung geht mit allen Rechten und Pflichten auf unsere beiderseitigen Rechtsnachfolger über

With ¹ the present document, I confirm that I have reached the following letter of agreement with you:

1.) I assign to you the publishing and translation right of the new edition begun by me of the collected piano sonatas of Beethoven, the revision and fingering of which I shall execute according to the autograph manuscripts, sketches, and first editions insofar as these are accessible at the present time.

2.) I commit myself to supplying each sonata with an introduction, and to reading all of the required proofs as thoroughly as possible.

3.) The edition will be undertaken on the basis of the plates already extant in your publishing house.

4.) For the edition of the sonatas bound as a single volume you will pay me a royalty of 40 Pfg. (forty Pfennigs), for the edition in several volumes the corresponding part-royalty for each volume (thus in two volumes @ twenty Pfennigs, in three volumes @ thirteen-and-one-third Pfennigs). The royalty for the individual editions will be reckoned such that I shall receive for each individual sonata a royalty of five Pfennigs.

5.) You accord me the right under the same conditions to edit also the piano sonatas of Haydn and Mozart.

{2} 6.) The statement of account has to be rendered half-yearly in the months of January and July, and and the honorarium due to me is to be disbursed in cash on the same deadlines.

7.) Since other letters of agreement exist with respect to the last five sonatas of Beethoven, your obligation in regard to royalty does not apply to these last five sonatas, but only to the remaining twenty-seven. I am however nonetheless obligated to subject these five sonatas to a review within the framework of the collected edition so that they conform to the collected sequence.

8.) This letter of agreement devolves with all rights and obligations upon our respective legal successors.
