Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker’s diary for October 22, 1934: “Von Wolf (Br.): hofft nächsten Mittwoch in Wien zu sein.” (“From Wolf (letter): he hopes to be in Vienna next Wednesday.”). The year of this letter is determined by internal evidence. — The diary for October 20 had already recorded: “Floriz avisirt Wolf tel. für Mittwoch.” (“Floriz lets [me] know by telephone that Wolf [will arrive] Wednesday [i.e. October 24].”). – In reality, the diary for October 23 records: “Violin bringt Wolf …” (“Violin brings Wolf …”). 2 Schenker’s letter to Furtwängler is not known to survive, but Furtwängler’s response, OJ 11/16, [16], October 3, 1934, states that he has telephoned the relevant authorities and been promised that the matter will be resolved immediately. — Schenker also thanks Oswald Jonas for his help in the Wolf matter: see OJ 5/18, 60, October 25, 1934, and Wilhelm Furtwängler on October 26 (diary): “An Furtwängler (Br.): Dank für Wolf usw.” (“To Furtwängler (letter): thanks for Wolf, etc.”). |
