Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/6, p. 3817, March 2, 1933: "Zuhause finden wir ein [sic] Brief von Furtwängler (durch Boten): komme heute 8h. ("When we get home, we find a letter from Furtwängler (by messenger): he is coming at 8 o'clock."). — A series of diary entries by Schenker relating to Furtwängler, Ludwig Karpath, and Joseph Marx precedes this letter: OJ 4/6, p. 3811, February 9, 1933; pp. 3812-3813, February 16; p. 3813, February 17; p. 3813, February 18; p. 3813, February 19; p. 3814, February 24; pp. 3814-3815, February 25; p. 3815, February 27; p. 3816, February 28; p. 3816, March 1. For more on these matters, see Heinrich Schenker: Selected Correspondence, eds. ("Furtwängler from 8:45 to a quarter to midnight. 'Masterclass' in Berlin impossible; reserved solely for 'resident Germans' (good!); he has spoken with Hubermann concerning help; I am to stay calm. He speaks once again of the University, to which, however, I do not belong. I seize my suggestion of Pernter and read out the article ‒ he finds fault with the expression 'Music is dead' ‒ the objection comes from the pro domo, as he in those days demonstrated against Brahms's expression 'only a conductor' ‒ a great deal about Brahms, from Brahms, finally the 'Leonora' Overture No. 3: V7."). |
